Social drinking vs alcoholism

Social drinking vs alcoholism

Social drinking vs alcoholism

Social drinking has become so acceptable in India that gone are days when teenagers would hide their whiskey in soft drink to avoid being caught by elders. Almost in every party you can find budding boys and girls proudly holding their can of beer and chatting with elderly people, looking straight in their eyes. Parents no longer have the guts or courage to question them as they themselves are hooked to drinking habits. This certainly is causing serious health problems, as only a few people know when to say NO.

A couple of months back a successful industrialist brought his only son, still in teens and with serious drinking problem. Before I could open my mouth to say a few words of advice, the handsome young boy directly shot a question “Hey doc! Don’t you guys suggest that red wine protects the heart and immune system? I drink only red wine as I have heard it’s great for health”.

The humble father completed the story. The son was drinking almost two bottles of red wine every single day and yet believed that he is just protecting his health and by no means he is an alcoholic.

Alcohol industry being one of the most profitable and giant industries all over the world is quite prone to manipulate opinions through sponsored columns advising couple of drinks, a glass of wine or beer for good health. We all know that drinking is such a temptation that not many people can limit to just one or two drinks. As one of my good physician friend comments, “if you slip once, you will find ways to slip again and again”.

The irony is that most people never realize or accept that they are alcoholics. Last month a sixty two year old Indian gentleman, settled in France, came to consult. On questioning when he revealed that he is regular with three vodkas for lunch and five scotches for dinner, I suggested he is alcoholic. I could see that he was quite uncomfortable with my opinion of his being alcoholic.

The problem of alcoholism is as old as alcohol itself. Master Ayurvedic scholars Charak, Sushruta and others deal with alcohol related health

problems at length in topics under ‘Madatyaya’ and ‘Panatyaya’. According to Ayurvedic viewpoint alcohol is similar to poison which in small dose acts like medicine but in excessive quantity threatens longevity. Ayurvedic term for alcohol is ‘Madya’ which is quite close to ‘Wine’. Ayurveda in detail describes numerous ways to prepare medicated herbal wines specific to various physical and mental disorders. But the dose of any such wine should not exceed more than one ounce, if being used for medicinal purpose.

Ayurveda observes four stages of alcoholism. In the first stage, which is known as ‘Pratham madmaha’, a person feels enlightenment, happiness, more confidence, better appetite, sense of elation and increased creativity.

In the second stage, which is known as ‘Dwitiya madmaha’ , the person feels disorientation of memory, speech and other actions. He starts loosing control on his senses of perception and becomes excited and restless.

Third stage of alcoholism is known as ‘Tritiya madmaha’. In this stage the alcoholic looses sanity and sense of discrimination. He likes to drive fast, disrespects elders, makes fun of noble and humble people, likes to eat inedible food and starts sharing his best-kept secrets with strangers. He starts laughing, shouting and singing without any reason and completely looses control of his mind.

In the fourth stage known as ‘Chaturtha madmaha’ the alcoholic looses all senses and falls on the ground. He feels nothing even if the dogs pee on his face. He completely blacks out and next morning he may not even remember anything.

Continuing with the second and third stage of alcoholism leads to chronic digestive problems, lack of appetite, disturbed sleep, loss of memory, bad temper, lack of confidence and self-esteem, high blood pressure, fatty degeneration of heart, cirrhosis of liver, tremors in the limbs and delirium.

The first drink of toast for your success and prosperity may be fine but the last one for the road always leads to the Road of failure and destruction. Take care my friends !!!

In this consumer oriented television culture where we have the option of choosing cars, shampoos, soaps and noodles at will, the gurus are aggressively campaigning to be picked up like any other utility product. Thanks to the television channel revolution we no more need to scale tough Himalayan heights to find a yogi or guru. They are easily available in the comfort of our soft bed through a gentle push on the remote control.

First we need to understand that what really Guru means. The literal meaning of this Sanskrit word is ‘bigger’, ‘larger’ or ‘heavier’. Guru translates as more ‘weight’ or ‘substance’. In popular perception Guru represents teacher, preceptor or a person who helps us understand and resolve the challenging intricacies of life and lead us on the path of self-realization and finally liberation.

In the journey of life mother becomes our first guru since she brings us up, helps to identify things and people and teaches us to communicate. Father becomes our other guru as he educates us about moral values, social conduct and provides us protection and sustenance. We also learn a lot from our elder siblings and friends. Later in school several teachers and books become many of our gurus.

When we become financially secure and socially independent we start looking for the sources from where we can learn, get experience and wisdom to grow in different dimensions. Such sources can be books, intellectual people or senior family members. This is also the time when the idea of finding a Guru may hit us.

Here most important exercise is to question our own self do we really need a guru or we are suffering from GAC (guru absence complex). These are two different things. It may happen that when we find big portraits of smiling saffron clad rich handsome faces displayed as Gurus ( people display their gurus like newly acquired expensive cars) in the homes of our friends or relatives, we develop a sort of guru absence insecurity. We may also feel like ‘possessing’ a guru to display with pride when people visit our home. In such case the importance and role of the guru will not be more than an expensive coffee table book, which we will never read or understand.

These days a big number of people go ‘Guru Shopping’ for some well defined obvious interests. Apart from other routine desires, top on their list is sickness, failure in business and marriage and career of grown up kids. Guru marketing has also polished the saffron corporations and smarted skills to cater to specific needs of their prospective devotee clientele. In this business of mutual worldly interests the true purpose of the divine and pure Guru tradition has suffered a serious setback.

The need of a guru is felt when someone starts a spiritual sojourn. For majority of the sadhakas this path of self-exploration is new and

Don’t shop for a Guru on TV
Don’t shop for a Guru on TV

completely unknown. Not many people have the knowledge and experience of stumbling blocks in ethereal voyage. The search for finding the right kind of spiritual guide has never been easy. It’s always the divine grace which comes to succor when we desperately seek. It may sound mysterious but the method of connecting with the spiritual guide is very simple. When we truly seek for help to advance on the spiritual path, the divinity definitely arranges the meeting. If one has not been able to meet his spiritual guide yet the chances are that one’s resolve has many holes in it.

It’s very important to know that a veritable Guru never tries to possess, hold and bind you to his clan or sect. He will guide you to liberate from many bonding including his own. The real Guru will always shy away from the tag of Guru and would prefer to be known as a spiritual guide. The genuine Guru will always help to connect you with the Maha Guru, which dwells in the cave of your own heart. A bona fide Guru never tries to impress you with miracles, promises of making you rich, curing your diseases, helping you earn more money and materializing instant suitable matches for your kids.

If your own concerns are such, you need a smart fixer and not a Guru.

Past Life Traumas and Current Life Traits

Past Life Traumas and Current Life Traits

(A true Past Life regression Story…

All the names and other details have been changed

to respect the privacy of the client)

A young girl from a small town in Haryana came to see me. She was an unmarried girl of medium height and fair complexion. She had large expressive eyes and sharp nose.  Her main issue was that she was always scared to look good and wear attractive and appealing clothes. Her family always scorned her for appearing shabby and ill dressed. On the other hand she discharged her all duties to the best of her ability like a perfectionist. She was very hardworking in her studies and always scored high but when it came to dressing well and looking good, she will become very nervous. Everyone around her thought that it was bizarre that she wouldn’t even put any sort of makeup on her face. When such day to day unwanted family skirmishes started bothering her too much, she came to see me to know the karmic connection of her strange apathy and unnatural behaviour towards looking good.

Once on the recliner in my therapy room and deeply regressed, she started to move her hands with the fineness of a dancer as she crossed the archway between present and past life. Even though partly lying on the recliner chair, her head and hands started moving like a Bharatanatyam dancer. For a while I allowed her to experience whatever was happening and then asked her that what was happening.

“I am a Bharatanatyam dancer. I am barefoot and my feet are painted red. I am wearing red and green saree. My saree is tied like a

Bharatanatyam dancer
Bharatanatyam dancer

dancer. I am rigorously practicing some difficult dance movements. I am obsessed with perfection. My Guru has disciplined me to be flawless and perfectionist. I am devoted to dance and I am dancer in a very big and beautiful temple. I have big and beautiful expressive eyes, full cheeks. I am wearing a nose pin. I am gorgeous. This is Tamil Nadu in 1968. A little boy is very fond of my dance performances and regularly visits me. He is not my child but I love him. I am preparing for a event for lord Vishnu. In that dance I will be enacting Padmawati, wife of Lord Vishnu.”

Here she again started moving her head, hands and body like a dancer and I allowed her to have that experience. I saw her moving in the chair like a dancer as if she was actually dancing. It was strange as in this life she has no knowledge or training of any sort of dance form. Her traditional Haryanvi family background didn’t allow her to venture in this area. The family focus was entirely on education to become an IAS officer. To see her move her head, hands and body like a dancer was quite startling for me.

After moving in the chair like a dancer for sometime, she stopped and became motionless and started talking again, They are hitting my head with a big stone and killing me. They are killing me as I am connected to someone very powerful in the temple and they are jealous of that. I was becoming very famous. People were coming to the temple more for my dance than for prayers. They didn’t want me there any more. They couldn’t remove me from the post of head dancer as my Guru is a very well known and powerful. I am also in relationship with my Guru and is very close to him. Killing me was the only option left to remove me from the scene. They crushed my face and head beyond any recognition. Now I am dead and leaving the body”

At this juncture I asked her that what were her lessons from that life from soul’s perspective. I asked her to review that life of traumatic death from her soul’s perspective.

They thought that my dancing was indecent and seductive. My killers thought that my dancing was invoking carnal desires in men rather devotion for God. For me dance was my devotion but they thought that I was seductress and poisoning men with sin. Being the best and perfectionist in my dance was what I was thriving for. I am sad that they couldn’t appreciate my passion for dance and judged me in a wrong way. They too  were cursed for their whole life for killing me.”

Slowly I brought her back to the present life and current time and asked her that what was her purpose in this life.

I need to let go in this life. I still have a fear of doom though I want to enjoy life. I know that my guides and angels also have been in pain with me and they have helped me to negotiate this trauma. I need to get over my traumas and move on. Now I know that why I am reluctant to dress well and look good. My beauty made me look seductive and caused my violent death. My dressing well always made me very uncomfortable as I was killed in full ceremonial dress of a dancer. This is the reason that I don’t dress up well and wear makeup. It connects me to the past life memory of death.”

After a few weeks of this session she changed her profile picture and sent me. She wore very appealing makeup. In her other pictures she wore very beautiful dresses and looked stunningly beautiful and gorgeous.

The mystery of Karmic Obligations

The mystery of Karmic Obligations

The mystery of Karmic Obligations

(A true Past Life regression Story…

All the names and other details have been changed

to respect the privacy of the client)

A forty year old man of medium height came to me. He was good looking and confident with a humble temperament. His concern was that even his genuine basic needs were being perceived by others including God as greed. He was going through huge stress in his professional as well personal life. Recently his father was diagnosed for serious heart issues and his mother in law’s early death had thrown his wife into serious depression.

He felt that in order to gain something, he had to sacrifice something bigger. He also felt that his life is very complexed and complicated and nothing manifests in his life easily. He constantly suffered the fear of rejection and failures. He wanted to do PLRT (Past Life Regression Therapy) to understand the Karmic Cause of all his woes in this life.

Once on the recliner in my therapy room and deeply regressed he started speaking, “I am looking at my feet. I am wearing string shoes. I am a young man. I am fair and have curly hair. I am strongly built with big jawbone. There are small hills around me. I am on a horse. This is the ancient medieval period. There are big stones and green grass around me. It’s a day with a clear bright sky.  I ride through the big stones to arrive in a village.  People are working here in an iron workshop. I hear the noise of beating the iron. I am in this town to collect money. People are poor here but I am still trying to extract money from them.  I can see the coins. They are made of copper with a bull symbol inlayed on their surface. Now I am in front of a bearded man who looks very poor and shabbily dressed. He fears me and gives me money. I leave after collecting money from other villagers.

Now it’s night and a campfire is going on. I am in a camping tent to hand over the collected money to a big guy. There are many armed

men around him. This big man appears ruthless and cruel. I do not wish to stay much in his presence. The big man tips me with a couple of coins. I do not like my job as its kind of robbing the poor people and collecting the money for this big man. I come out. In a nearby tent there are a few girls dancing. I go there to see the dance but do not enjoy it and leave. I am restless and unhappy.

Some days later I am again visiting the same village. An old woman has recently died there. I feel very sad to hear that. People are very upset and shouting at me. They want me to leave. All the villagers are against me and try to beat me. I feel bad for them and do not retaliate. A young kid shoots an arrow directly in my heart. I fell down next to a well. No one helps me. I have been left unattended. I slowly die. I see my body lying down on the ground. I regret living this useless life. This life was a complete waste. It was only about exhorting money from the poor for a bad guy”.

At this point I asked him that what was his programming from this life from his soul’s perspective. He said, My programming from this life is that whatever I do or whatever amount of hard work I put in my job, I will not get happiness and will finally be killed.  I am overpowered by a strange kind of sadness and apathy. My other fear in this life is that I will also not be able to enjoy my life and will die before I can even live a life of joy and happiness.”

I further questioned him that what lessons he has learned from this past life in order to make concrete positive changes in the current life. He replied, “I need to learn to be happy with my life. I need to prioritize my needs and make more money to fulfill my desires. I need to find joy in what I am doing and put my whole hearted best efforts. I also need to do charity and help people in order to purge the karmic guilt, I am carrying from this past life.”

After the above session he felt that things have much improved and he started seeing more clarity in his professional life. He said that he has understood the mystery of  Karmic obligations manifesting in his current life.
