Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth, faithfulness the best relationship. Without health life is not life; it is only a state of languor and suffering – an image of death. To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one’s family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one’s own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him.
As I wrote once, today past life regression therapy may be a new thing, but for Hindus and Buddhists past life and reincarnation has always been part of the core religious belief. All Hindu scriptures are full of stories of past life connection in the afterlife. Reincarnation, not once but many times, has many references in all Puranas. There are many references in scriptures that Lord Rama’s past life was of Lord Vishnu and He further reincarnated as Lord Krishna in Dwapar Yuga. Goddess Parvati lived as King Daksha’s daughter Sati in her past life. Many such events in Puranas confirm Hindu belief in past life and reincarnation.
Lord Buddha is the 9th reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. Today is the festival of Buddha Purnima. This festival isn’t just the celebration of Buddha’s birthday. The Buddha Purnima is the celebration of enlightenment and death of Lord Buddha. It is the celebration of the basic beliefs of Buddhism – karunaa (kindness) and ahimsa (non-violence).
Celebrating Buddha Purnima or the Vesākha also means making special efforts to bring happiness to the unfortunate like the aged, the handicapped and the sick. As Buddha tells us: We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.
So, Friends! Let us celebrate Buddha Purnima to enhance Kindness and Non-Violence in our thoughts and actions, so that we can fill our society, our country and the entire world with the Happiness and Joyfulness and peacefulness.
